How do visitors experience Stadspark Maastricht, and what problems do they perceive regarding waste, noise, and responsibility? Researchers from Maastricht University examined these questions on behalf of the municipality. In total, 602 valid responses were analysed, collected from residents who regularly visit the park. Here are some key findings: • The park is generally used in a calm way, but summer brings more visitors and more nuisance. People mainly use the park for walking or as a transit route. “Park use is strongly seasonal: the park is visited significantly more often in summer than in winter.” • Littering and noise nuisance are perceived as clearly more severe during the summer. Respondents link this to crowding, social activities, and events. • Young people and students are most often identified as the main sources of nuisance. At the same time, many respondents indicate that waste and noise are caused by visitors of all age groups. • Strong social norms, but limited intervention behaviour. Almost everyone believes the park should remain clean and quiet, and “92.4% report feeling guilty if they themselves would leave waste behind.” However, only about one third of visitors actually address others about inappropriate behaviour. • Trust in the municipality is moderate. Visitors believe the municipality has a major responsibility, but question whether this responsibility is sufficiently fulfilled. • Experiences shape attitudes. Network analyses show that seeing litter, experiencing loud music, and feeling emotionally connected to the park are key factors influencing how people perceive nuisance.
