Earlier this year, we asked part of our resident panel what they think about tourism in Maastricht. What do they find positive about it? And what do they think are downsides? More than 700 panel members shared their opinions. Almost all respondents perceived that tourism in Maastricht has both positive and negative sides. Most mentioned positive sides: - strengthening local economy (mentioned by 66%) - preserving cultural identity and historical buildings (52%) - increasing income and standard of living (51%) - more shopping and catering facilities (48%). Most mentioned negatives: - more traffic problems (73%) - it will be too busy (65%) - more litter (41%). Half of those surveyed feel proud to be Maastricht residents because of tourism, but at the same time half are worried about how tourism is developing. 47% think too many visitors are coming to Maastricht and, according to 39%, further growth will cause friction with residents. Despite these concerns, 47% think the advantages of tourism in Maastricht outweigh the disadvantages (26% disagree and the rest were neutral). 2 in 3 respondents believe Maastricht should remain a tourist city (69%). This survey was conducted together with the Hotel Management School. Maastricht City Council will use the results when making plans about tourism in the city.
